Project Overview
This comprehensive survey was conducted to evaluate the coverage, utilization, and public health impact of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) distributed through Ethiopia’s national malaria control program. The study covered multiple regions and involved thousands of households to provide nationally representative data.
Research Objectives
- Assess the coverage and equity of LLIN distribution
- Evaluate net utilization patterns among different demographic groups
- Measure the impact on malaria transmission indicators
- Identify barriers to proper net use and maintenance
- Provide evidence for program improvement
Methodology
The study employed a cross-sectional design with multi-stage cluster sampling to ensure national representativeness. Data was collected through household surveys, net durability assessments, and analysis of routine health information system data. Entomological surveys were conducted in selected sites to measure changes in vector populations and malaria transmission.
Key Findings
- Achieved 85% coverage of at-risk populations with LLINs
- Demonstrated 30% reduction in malaria incidence in intervention areas
- Identified key behavioral factors affecting net use
- Provided evidence for targeted distribution strategies
Impact
The findings directly informed Ethiopia’s national malaria strategic plan and contributed to improved net distribution strategies. The research demonstrated the importance of post-distribution monitoring and evaluation in vector control programs.
